Creature Mark Poster
The goal of this project was to portray the distinctive characteristics and individual personality traits of my animal using design elements such as point, line, and shape. Developed a creature mark, where we were directed to activate the image area by designing a single composition with components whose spatial relationships are informed/influenced by a logical division of space based on the Fibonacci Sequence.
Research
To begin my research, I explored visuals of the California Quail, drawn to its distinct features. The unique forehead plume, feathers, and round-shaped torso immediately stood out. Both tangible and intangible characteristics were studied to refine the design process.
Tangible Traits
Curved Forehead Plume
Plump Body
Facial Markings
Dotted Head Feathers
Scale Like Belly Feather
Intangible Traits
Observant
Friendly
Alert
Curious
Sketching of Creature Mark
In my sketches, my primary focus was to capture the rounded, plump body of the quail and its forehead plume. I aimed to portray these distinctive features in a way that would also highlight the quail's curious and observant nature.
Digital Creature Mark Ideations
Use an oval and curvilinear shape as my underlying structure to emphasize the quail's features. By creating smooth, implied strokes throughout the mark allowed for visual interest and movement. Applied repetition of the crescent shape to unify the different feather patterns throughout the body of the quail. Used figure-ground reversal on the scale feather pattern on the belly to show that the feathered pattern isn’t restricted to the oval/belly. Felt that it was appropriate that the wings stay tucked and the quail appear to be on the ground rather than in a tree. The turn of the head and the position of the body demonstrate its alertness. It allows the viewer to see the unique head plume and the scale feather pattern on its belly.

Sketches of Creature Mark Poster
Following the completion of my final creature mark, the project's second phase involved integrating typographic elements into a poster design. In my sketches, a variety of different compositions was explored. This involved repetition of shape and form and focused on an environment that would relate to my poem.

Color and Typographic Ideations
In my color iterations, I wanted to capture the idea of calm and tranquilness with a split complementary color palette.
